EMERGENCY is seeking experienced Medical Coordinators to oversee the clinical activities of its surgical projects in Afghanistan and Sierra Leone, ensuring the quality of care and compliance with hospital protocols.
The current recruitment focuses on two countries where the organization has a long-standing presence: Afghanistan and Sierra Leone.
EMERGENCY has been working in Afghanistan since 1999 and is currently present in the country with 3 Surgical Centers (in Kabul, Lashkar-Gah, and Anabah), a Maternity Center in Anabah, a network of 40 First Aid Posts and Health Centers, as well as clinics in several prisons across the country.
EMERGENCY's hospital in Kabul is the most important Trauma Center in Afghanistan. It has a facility with 100 inpatient beds, 3 operating rooms, 5 intensive care beds (equipped with ventilators), and a CT scanner. In 2024, approximately 2,900 hospital admissions were recorded, and around 4,450 trauma surgeries were performed.
EMERGENCY's hospital in Anabah is equipped with 60 inpatient beds, 2 operating rooms, and 6 sub-intensive care beds. In 2024, approximately 2,500 hospital admissions were recorded, with around 750 emergency trauma surgeries and 950 elective general surgeries performed. Since 2003, the Anabah Surgical and Pediatric Center has also hosted a Maternity Center, the only specialized and free facility available in the region. A pediatric outpatient clinic is also active within the Center.
EMERGENCY's hospital in Lashkar-Gah is equipped with 100 inpatient beds, 3 operating rooms, and 6 sub-intensive care beds. In 2024, it recorded 6,100 hospital admissions and approximately 6,900 surgical procedures for trauma emergencies.
All three Centers host medical residents specializing in emergency surgery, traumatology, and anesthesia and intensive care, in close collaboration with local authorities.
EMERGENCY's Surgical Center in Goderich, opened in 2001, serves as the referral hospital for surgery and traumatology across Sierra Leone.
The Center is equipped with 3 operating rooms, 6 sub-intensive care beds, and 66 inpatient beds.
The majority of cases involve pediatric patients under 15 years old requiring urgent general surgery or treatment for trauma. Admission criteria for children also include severe burns and caustic soda ingestion with esophageal injuries, for which a unique program has been developed in the country.
Adult patients receive care for severe trauma and emergency abdominal conditions.
In 2024, the Goderich Hospital recorded approximately 1,400 admissions and 2,500 surgical procedures.
Working alongside a multidisciplinary team, the Medical Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring the medical and surgical care standards required by EMERGENCY and in promoting effective training within the hospitals.
It is essential for the candidate to demonstrate a willingness to learn and an openness to understanding the approach that EMERGENCY has developed over the years in the contexts where it operates, in order to align clinical activities with the organization’s principles and practices.
The role requires close collaboration in the field with the Medical and Surgical Department Heads and the Head Nurse, as well as coordination with the Medical and Nursing Management (Main Office) to ensure alignment on clinical direction and objectives.
